Big Thief is an American indie folk-rock band formed 2015 in Brooklyn, New York, by Adrianne Lenker (vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums). Starting out, Lenker met Meek at a show in Boston and after meeting him again in Brooklyn as undergraduates, the pair began performing as a duo called Pencil. They toured in 2013, and released two EPs, a-sides and b-sides, in 2014. In 2015, after performing for two years and developing a small grassroots following, they began looking for additional members to accompany them, and formed the band Big Thief with the arrival of Max Oleartchik, a bassist and longtime friend of Meek's. James Krivchenia joined the band later, originally as a sound engineer and then as a drummer. All four members of Big Thief attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. The band's first album, Masterpiece, was released on Saddle Creek Records on May 27, 2016 and received very positive reviews. Their lo-fi sound is in the same intimate vein as The Cowboy Junkies, and elicits reviewer comments such as "charming", "magical" and "ethereal", without becoming bland, due to excellent songwriting and the lead vocals of Adrianne Lenker. Their third album UFOF was recorded in a log cabin in Washington State, and their fourth album, the excellent Two Hands, was captured outdoors in the Texan desert. The band's fifth studio album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, released in February 2022, was recorded in four different locations across the US after the band quarantined in the Vermont woods for two weeks in July 2020. All the band's releases are highly recommended. Adrianne Lenker also releases solo works under her own name, as does Buck Meek.
