Bill Callahan | Artist

Bill Callahan is an American progressive folk singer-songwriter and guitarist born 1966 in Silver Spring, Maryland. He also records and performs under the band name Smog. Callahan initially created lo-fi works using home-made tape-albums recorded on four track. Smog's songs are often based on simple, repetitive structures, consisting of a simple chord progression repeated for the duration of the entire song. His singing is characterized by his baritone voice. Since signing with Drag City, Callahan has started using recording studios and a greater variety of instruments for his recordings. His "pastoral folk" style has been compared with John Martyn and Van Morrison by some reviewers. Callahan has also worked in a duo with Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) under the name The Sundowners. Outstanding albums under the name Bill Callahan include Sometimes I wish we Were an Eagle, Apocalypse and Dream River. Under the name Smog, outstanding albums include Red Apple Falls, Knock Knock, Dongs of Sevotion, Supper and A River Ain't Much to Love. Callahan's most recent album, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest (2019) received favourable reviews, with Pitchfork referring to it as a "highlight of his career".
