William Martin "Billy" Joel is an American singer-songwriter, composer and pianist born 1949 in The Bronx, New York City. Joel started his musical career in short-lived bands The Hassles and Attila before kicking off his solo career in '71 with his debut album Cold Spring Harbour. Although the album didn't take off, Joel's song "Captain Jack" snared the attention of Columbia Records who released Joel's second album Piano Man which launched his fame and fortune containing, as it did, the singles "Captain Jack" and "Piano Man". The comparatively lacklustre release Streetlife Serenade followed, then the much better Turnstiles was released in '76. But 1977-78 saw the release of arguably Joel's best works The Stranger and 52nd Street, which established his success worldwide. Joel continued to release new work up until 2001 and since then has kept up a touring schedule, sometimes in tandem with Elton John. Outstanding albums include Piano Man, Turnstiles, The Stranger, 52nd Street and the live album Songs in the Attic.
