Bronski Beat is a British synthpop trio formed 1983 in Brixton, London, by Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek. They achieved major success in the mid-1980s, particularly with dance, club and gay audiences, with the 1984 chart hit "Smalltown Boy", from their debut album The Age of Consent. The band's lyrics focused on anti-gay prejudice and they produced a string of hit singles which appealed to a wide audience internationally. Somerville left the band in 1987 and formed The Communards. Outstanding releases include The Age of Consent, Hundreds and Thousands and the single Smalltown Boy.
