Bryan Ferry CBE is an English singer and songwriter born 1945 in Washington, County Durham. Ferry is best know as singer and frontman of art-rock band Roxy Music over the period 1971-2011. He began making solo works in 1973 in parallel to his work with Roxy and, since 2011 has led The Bryan Ferry Orchestra. From the outset Ferry broke tradition with the standard blues-rock vocal style and developed his own "elegant, seductive croon" as it has been described. He also established a distinctive image and sartorial style which, along with contemporaries such as David Bowie, influenced a generation with both their music and their appearances. On his solo albums Ferry specialises in re-workings of classic songs such as "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall", "These Foolish Things" and "Send in the Clowns", as well as his own compositions that hark back to Roxy Music's work. The former Roxy band members all pop up on his solo albums, plus he works closely with guitar supremo Chris Spedding. Outstanding albums include These Foolish Things, Let's Stick Together, Boys and Girls, Bête noire, Frantic and Avonmore. The 2020 archival release Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1974 is also highly recommended.
