Charles Mingus was an American jazz double bassist, pianist, composer and bandleader born 1922 in Nogales, Arizona. Mingus was a major proponent of jazz improvisation and is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history. He was so prolific as a composer, many of his scores kept in the American Library of Congress have still not been played to this day. His life is graphically portrayed in the autobiography Beneath The Underdog. In a long catalogue of brilliant albums, some standouts are Pithecanthropus Erectus, The Clown, Mingus Ah Um, Blues & Roots, Oh Yeah, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus and Let my Children Hear Music.
