Grand Funk Railroad is an American hard rock band formed 1969 in Flint, Michigan, by Don Brewer (drums, percussion, vocals), Mark Farner (vocals, guitar, harmonica) and Mel Schacher (bass, vocals). Modelled after power-trio Cream, Grand Funk played no-holds-barred hard rock and became hugely popular during the 1970s. Although they have been somewhat derided by critics, they sold records and sold-out arenas with their strutting cock-rock style. The band first came together when Brewer and Farner left their former band Terry Knight & The Pack, to join up with former Question Mark and the Mysterians bassist Mel Schacher. They named themselves after the Grand Trunk Western Railroad in Michigan and Terry Knight became their Manager. The band immediately became a popular performing unit, with well received sets at both the 1969 and 1970 Atlanta International Pop Festivals. In August 1969, the band released its debut album On Time on Capitol Records, which sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold record. In February 1970, a second album, Grand Funk also achieved gold status despite being panned by the critics. In 1972, the band added ex-Bob Seger Band keyboardist Craig Frost, giving them a more R&B style. Originally, the band had attempted to attract Peter Frampton after he left Humble Pie, however he was committed to a solo record deal with A&M Records. The band has carried on to release 13 studio albums plus several excellent live albums. Don Brewer and Mel Schacher are still in the band, however Mark Farner left in 1997 to pursue a solo career. Standout albums include On Time, Grand Funk, Closer to Home and Live Album from 1970.
