Iced Earth is an American heavy metal band formed 1984 in Tampa, Florida, by guitarist and main songwriter Jon Schaffer and original drummer Greg Seymour. They were originally named the Rose, then Purgatory, then Iced Earth. 30 different musicians have been in the band over it's lifetime, including former Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens, between 2003-07. The band's music has been described variously as heavy metal, thrash metal, power metal and speed metal. When asked about the band's musical style, band leader and chief lyricist Schaffer said: "We're a metal band. That's what we are. We have every dynamic from Pink Floyd to Slayer, and everything in between". Between 1991-2017 the band released 14 studio albums, standouts include Night of the Stormrider, Burnt Offerings, Days of Purgatory and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Jon Schaffer was arrested by the FBI in January 2021 for his involvement in the Capitol riots. Schaffer is in FBI custody on felony charges, which has generated new publicity for Iced Earth and has resulted in the band being dropped from their longtime label Century Media.
