Johnny Cash was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and author born 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas. Cash's earliest work was at Sun Studio in Memphis with his band The Tennessee Two. They played a blend of rock and roll, rockabilly, blues and gospel music that was as innovative as his contemporaries Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Cash was known for his deep bass-baritone voice and a trademark all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black". Cash's first recordings came about when he visited the Sun Records studio to audition his gospel songs to Sam Phillips. Upon being told by Phillips that he no longer recorded gospel music, Cash tried out new material in a rockabilly style which impressed the producer. In 1955 Cash made his first recordings at Sun, "Hey Porter" and "Cry! Cry! Cry!", which were released in June and met with success on the country hit parade. Cash grew to become one of the most admired and successful American musicians in history and sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Cash and his wife June Carter performed together and released several albums as a duo. Outstanding albums include the classic live albums At Folsom Prison and At San Quentin, as well as Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar!, The Fabulous Johnny Cash, I Walk the Line, Orange Blossom Special, and the American Recordings series from late in his career.
