Kali Malone | Artist
Kali Malone aka Medicine Bow is an American composer, musician, and producer, born 1994 in Denver Colorado. She is fast becoming a leading figure in the experimental music scene with her unique approach to minimalism and drone music. Malone was raised in Denver, then moved to Massachusetts to study music. In 2012 she relocated to Stockholm after meeting the Swedish avant-garde composer Ellen Arkbro. In Stockholm she studied electroacoustic composition at the Royal College of Music. Malone's work is characterised by its exploration of tuning systems, harmonics, and the physicality of sound, blurring the lines between classical, ambient, and electronic music. Her works implement unique tuning systems in minimalist form for analogue and digital synthesis, sometimes combined with voices and acoustic instrumentation, creating a hypnotic and immersive sonic experience for listeners. One of Malone's most acclaimed works is her Fourth album The Sacrificial Code released in 2019. The work showcases her mastery of minimalist composition, with slowly evolving drones and rich harmonic textures that create a sense of timelessness and contemplation. In 2022 she released the album Living Torch which also attracted widespread critical acclaim. Then came Does Spring Hide its Joy (2023), which is a collaboration with guitarist Stephen O'Malley and cellist Lucy Railton. Her most recent album is 2024's All Life Long, which also features O'Malley, along with the chamber quintet Anima Brass, and Finnish trace DJ Macadam. All her albums released to-date are well recommended. Malone is also a founding member of the Stockholm based XKatedral record label and collective, comprising a group of artists dedicated to exploring the intersections of music, art, and technology. Through collaborations with other musicians, visual artists, and designers, Malone continues to push the boundaries of experimental music, creating multi-sensory experiences that challenge traditional notions of composition and performance. Malone's live performances are immersive and transcendent experiences, often taking place in unconventional spaces such as churches, galleries, and industrial warehouses. Malone is married to Sunn O))) guitarist Stephen O'Malley, which they announced in July 2023.
