Laura Marling | Artist
Laura Marling is an English folk singer-songwriter born 1990 in Eversley, Berkshire. Her mother is a music teacher and her father, Sir Charles William Somerset Marling, 5th Baronet, is a former session guitarist who ran a recording studio. He introduced her to folk music and shaped her musical taste from an early age. After finishing school at 16, she joined her older sisters and settled in London becoming part of a cluster of intertwined bands that were drawn to acoustic instruments and traditional melodies, a musical movement that was labelled "nu-folk". Her easy voice, old-soul lyricism, and deft fingerpicking evoke the warm and wintry vibe of late-'60s/early-'70s classic rock and folk. After gigging as a solo performer she released her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim, on the Virgin label, which was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize. She has since released a further Six studio albums of consistently high quality, culminating with 2020's Song For Our Daughter. Standout albums include Alas I Cannot Swim (2008), I Speak Because I Can (2010), Once I Was an Eagle (2013), Song For Our Daughter (2020), and her latest album Patterns in Repeat (2024). Marling also collaborates with Mike Lindsay from the band Tunng. Their duo LUMP has released two albums as of 2024. Marling won the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist at the 2011 Brit Awards, and was nominated for the same award at the 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 Brit Awards. As of 2020, Marling is enrolled in a masters degree program in psychoanalysis. A very private person, Marling lives in northeast London with her boyfriend and older sister. Since giving birth to her first child in February 2023, Marling has been contemplating stepping away from music. “There’s a part of me that feels like, will I just disappear? Maybe it would be nice to go and get old out of the spotlight – like Kate Bush.”
