Nicolás Jaar is a Chilean-American composer and recording artist born 1990 in New York. Jaar was born to Chilean parents Evelyne Meynard, a dancer, and Alfedo Jaar, an artist and architect. After his parents' separation, Jaar moved with his mother to Santiago at the age of three, then moved back to New York at the age of nine. Jaar works as a soloist under his own name and under the aliases Against All Logic and Ancient Astronaut. He also works with multi-instumentalist Dave Harrington in the bands Darkside and Bladerunner, plus he works with Steven Spielberg's daughter, the singer Sasha Spielberg, in the duo Just Friends. As a teenager, Jaar performed at many of the legendary "Marcy" parties in Brooklyn and was active in the NY underground dance scene creating rough, hip hop influenced house music, releasing early singles "Love You Gotta Lose Again" and "Don't Believe the Hype". The artist's breakthrough came with his 2011 debut album, Space is Only Noise which garnered critical acclaim with a four star rating from The Guardian and #1 album of the year ranking by Resident Advisor, Mixmag, and Crack Mag. 2013 saw the release of Psychic, the debut album from Darkside which also was critically acclaimed, receiving a 9.0 score on Pitchfork. In February 2015, came an ambient and noise record entitled Pomegranates, which was described by one reviewer as sounding "like broken Middle Eastern instruments half-playing a modal melody amid bursts of hiss". Later that year, Jaar scored the soundtrack to Dheepan, a thriller by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2015. His second studio album, Sirens, was released in September 2016 and Rolling Stone named it the #1 Electronic Album of the year. In addition to his own work, Jaar co-produced most of FKA Twigs's second studio album, Magdalene, released in October 2019. He also founded New York-based imprint Other People which has published music from artists such as Lydia Lunch, DJ Slugo, William Basinski, and Julia Holter. Recommended albums include Against All Logic 2012-2017 (2018) and 2017-2019 (2020), Space is Only Noise (2011), Sirens (2016), Archivos de Radio Piedras (2024), plus the two Darkside albums, Psychic and Spiral.
