Nine Inch Nails aka NIN is an American industrial rock band founded 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio, by singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Trent Reznor. Multi-instrumentalist Atticus Ross joined in 2016. The band melds alternative rock, industrial, dance, metal and dark ambient styles, coupled with lyrical themes exploring religion, greed, fame, lust, addiction, self-deception, aging, regret, and nihilism. Starting out, Reznor was briefly the keyboardist in a synth-pop band but quit to become assistant engineer and janitor at Right Track Studios, where he was given free reign to make his own demo tracks after hours. Reznor was unable to find a band that could play the material he wanted so he played all the instruments except drums himself. He has continued to play most parts on Nine Inch Nails recordings ever since. Nine Inch Nails' first album, the excellent Pretty Hate Machine, debuted in 1989. It marked his first collaboration with UK dub maestro Adrian Sherwood, who produced the lead single "Down in It". Engineer Sean Beavan mixed the demos and went on to mix sound during Nine Inch Nails' live concerts, eventually becoming an unofficial member of the live band singing backup vocals from the mixing console. 1992 saw the release of the superb Broken EP, followed but the equally superb full length album The Downward Spiral, in 1994. That album remains the highest-selling Nine Inch Nails release in the USA selling over four million copies, in addition to selling five million copies worldwide. Stylistically, the album exhibits Influences of the late 1970s work by Pink Floyd and David Bowie. At this stage the band had achieved considerable mainstream success and was renowned for the production values and theatrical elements of their live shows. To-date NIN has released 12 studio albums, one live album, and numerous EPs. Standouts include Pretty Hate Machine, Broken (EP), The Downward Spiral, The Fragile, Still, Bad Witch and the 2002 live album And All That Could Have Been. Nine Inch Nails have sold over 20 million records and have been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning for the songs "Wish" (1992) and "Happiness in Slavery" (1996). In 1997, Time Magazine named Reznor one of the the world's most influential people, and Spin has described him as "the most vital artist in music".
