O Yuki Conjugate | Artist
O Yuki Conjugate are an English post-industrial/ambient musical group founded 1982 in Nottingham by Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme. Their music has been variously described as 'ambient', 'fourth world', 'ethnic', 'tribal ambient' and 'dark wave.' The core duo of Horberry aka 'Alp' and Hulme work with a rotating cast of additional players. Previous members include Clare Elliot, Tim Horberry, Malcolm McGeorge, Dan Mudford, Pete Woodhead and Rob Jenkins, with Joe Gardiner contributing sax. Originally inspired by the industrial sounds of post-punk, they soon developed their own brand of electronic ambient with dub overtones, combining high tech editing, low tech electronics and found instrumentation. To-date the band has released seven studio albums, plus live releases. Standouts include their 1984 debut Scene in Mirage, plus Into Dark Water (1987), Peyote (1981), and Equator (1994). Also highly recommended is the 2010 compilation Ambiguism 1983-1987. In describing the band's music, one reviewer suggested the following diverse precedents: "their music's closest relatives are Pink Floyd's "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun", the mysticism of Popol Vuh, the black-hole of early Tangerine Dream, the experiments of Conrad Schnitzler, and the virtual ghostly ethnic of Jon Hassell". Outside of OYC, Andrew Hulme has also worked with fellow industrial ambient musician Paul Schütze, resulting in the album Fell (1996), and Horberry as Alp has released two solo works.
