The Go-Betweens were an Australian indie rock band formed 1977 in Brisbane, Queensland, by singer-songwriters and guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. The lineup grew to include Lindy Morrison (drums), Robert Vickers (bass), Amanda Brown (violin, oboe, guitar, keyboards) and John Willsteed (bass, guitar, organ). Forster and McLennan met at the University of Queensland where both were taking a theatre arts course and after forming the band, spent large portions of their time away in the UK. The band generated much critical acclaim for their superb songwriting skills and their characteristic Indie sound, achieving cult status in Australia and the UK, but commercial success eluded them. The Village Voice critic Robert Christgau described Forster and McLennan as "the greatest songwriting partnership working today." Several of their successful singles are "Lee Remick", "Cattle and Cane", "Spring Rain", "Head Full of Steam" and "Streets of Our Town". Between 1984-2000 they recorded five masterpiece albums: Spring Hill Fair (1984), Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (1986), Tallulah (1987), 16 Lovers Lane (1988) and The Friends of Rachel Worth (2000). Other standout albums include Before Hollywood, Oceans Apart, and the live albums Live in London (2005) and That Striped Sunlight Sound (2006). After they disbanded in 2006, Forster and McLennan both went on to release excellent solo albums. Grant McLennan passed away in in May 2006.
