The Panics | Artist

The Panics is an Australian indie rock band formed 2002 in Perth, Western Australia, by Jae Laffer (vocals, guitar, piano), Drew Wootton (vocals, guitar), Julian Douglas (guitar, piano), Paul Otway (bass) and Myles Wootton (drums). The band got lucky early on when they were spotted playing at a Perth Hotel by Gaz Whelan and Pete Carroll from Happy Mondays, following the Mondays' Perth Big Day Out performance in 2000. Carroll and Whelan signed the band to their UK-based LittleBIGMAN label and, two years later, invited them to play at In The City, the UK's annual music convention. The band plays shimmery, meditative pop music akin to the sounds of UK bands like The Stone Roses and The Only Ones. The band's debut album A House on a Street in a Town I'm From was recorded in part in Manchester, then finished off back in Australia. It got very positive reviews and was promoted by radio station Triple-J. The band's second album Sleeps Like a Curse is regarded as their masterpiece and was produced in Australia by Tim Whitten who had worked with The Go-Betweens, The Necks and The Smiths. The band then went back for a second tour of the UK, supporting Happy Mondays and were recorded in performance for a BBC broadcast. To-date the band has recorded five studio albums and several excellent EPs. Outstanding releases include A House on a Street in a Town I'm From, Sleeps Like a Curse, Cruel Guards and the EP Crack in The Wall.
