Deus is a Belgian art-rock band formed 1989 in Antwerp, Belgium, by Tom Barman (vocals, guitar), Klaas Janzoons (violin), Rudy Trouvé (guitar), Stef Kamil Carlens (bass, vocals) and Jules de Borgher (drums). After ongoing lineup changes Barman and Janzoons are the only continuous members. The band first came to attention in 1992 after the release of their EP "Zea" and were signed by Island Records. They were the first Belgian indie act ever to sign to a major international label. Deus' debut album Worst Case Scenario released in 1994, drew influences from Frank Zappa, Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart, and attracted critical acclaim. After a less successful second album the band followed up with two excellent releases, In a Bar Under The Sea from '96 and The Ideal Crash from '99, which again had critics raving about the band's superb yet idiosyncratic songwriting and creative art-rock sound palette. The success of these releases earned them commercial success and a worldwide cult following. Their fifth album Pocket Revolution was also strong but it and the albums to follow have not surpassed the earlier two works. Standout albums include Worst Case Scenario, In a Bar Under the Sea, The Ideal Crash and Pocket Revolution.
