Mylène Jeanne Gautier aka Mylène Farmer, is a Canadian-born French singer, songwriter, actress, writer, and entrepreneur, born 1961 in Pierrefonds, Montreal. Having sold more than 30 million records in France, she is among the most successful recording artists of all time in that country. After she was born in Canada to French parents, Gautier's family soon relocated to Charville near Paris, where Farmer pursued a career in modelling and acting. She later gained prominence as a recording artist with the release of her debut single "Maman a tort" in 1984. In 1988, she released her second studio album, Ainsi soit je which sold 1.5 million copies in France. Her third studio album, L'autre sold two million copies, becoming Farmer's best-selling album to date. Its lead single, "Désenchantée", became Farmer's most successful single, and is often described as her signature song. Departing from the synth-pop and Europop sounds of her first albums, Farmer reinvented her musical style with the release of her fourth studio album, Anamorphosée in 1995. Recorded in the US, the album shows rock and R&B-oriented influences. Her subsequent albums show further developments including techno and electronica influences, done in collaboration with artists such as Laurent Boutonnat, Moby and Archive. Farmer has also collaborated with ex-Police singer Sting. To-date Farmer has released 12 studio albums plus many excellent live albums. Standouts include Ainsi soit je.. (1988), L'autre (1991), Innamoramento (1999) , Avant que l'ombre.. (2005) and the 2001 compilation Les mots. Farmer is regarded as a gay icon, with her recordings and performances being hugely popular among the LGBTI+ community. Her status has been attributed to her lyrics, which often feature references to homosexual love and sexuality, and her tomboy image early in her career. The artist adopted her stage name as an homage to Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, whose character always fascinated her.
