Nadja is a Canadian ambient metal duo formed 2003 in Toronto by Aidan Baker (guitar, vocals, drum programming) and Leah Buckareff (bass, vocals). Nadja began as a solo project for Baker to explore the heavier and noisier side of his experimental ambient music performed mainly on the electric guitar. In 2005 Buckareff joined, and the couple later married and relocated to Berlin. The duo combines soundscape, electronics and atmospheric vocals with slow, epic riffs and dirge-like percussion, creating a slowly moving grand wall of music that has been described as doomgaze, drone, ambient-doom, and shoegaze-metal. Aidan himself is fond of the term "dreamsludge" to describe his music. Prolific recording artists, the band has to-date released 58 studio albums, including several collaborations with the likes of Atavist, Pyramids, Black Boned Angel, OvO, Vampillia, and Uochi Toki. Standout albums include Touched (two versions 2003 and 2007), Truth Becomes Death (2005), Corrasian (2007), Radiance of Shadows (2007) and The Bungled & The Botched (2008). Aidan Baker has also issued numerous solo albums and collaborations with Tim Hecker and many others. Baker is also a member of Berlin based outfits Hypnodrone Ensemble and Caudal. The band name is a reference to the Nadja character from André Breton's book of the same name and Elina Löwensohn's character from the 1994 vampire movie.
