Inti Illimani is a Chilean folk ensemble formed 1967 in Santiago by university students Jorge Coulón (vocals, guitar), Horacio Durán (vocals, charango), Horacio Salinas (vocals, guitar), Max Berrú (vocals, percussion), Pedro Yáñez (vocals, guitar), Óscar Guzmán (1967), Ciro Retamal (1967), and Luis Espinoza (1967). Over their long history the lineup has changed, including the addition of Marcelo Coulón (vocals, guitar, quena, recorder) and José Seves (vocals, guitar, percussion). Jorge Coulón is the only original member currently in the band. This legendary Chilean ensemble has been a constant symbol of resistance against the oppressive Pinochet regime, earning a reputation as one of the most influential musical groups in Latin America. The name "Inti Illimani" translates to 'Sun of the Golden Eagle' in Aymara language, reflecting the band's deep connection to Andean culture. The group's music is a fusion of traditional Andean folk melodies, Latin American rhythms, and global influences, creating a unique and vibrant sound that transcends borders and genres. Inti Illimani's early years were marked by a commitment to social justice and human rights, using their music as a tool for resistance and solidarity. In the aftermath of the 1973 military coup in Chile, which brought dictator Augusto Pinochet to power, the band was forced into exile, traveling the world and spreading their message of hope and freedom through their powerful performances. Despite facing censorship and persecution, Inti Illimani continued to create music that spoke truth to power, denouncing human rights abuses and championing the cause of the oppressed. The band's discography includes over 40 studio albums, including collaborations with other leading artists. Standout albums include Inti-Illimani (1970), Autores chilenos (1971), Viva Chile! (1973), La nueva canción chilena (1974), Canto de pueblos andinos (1975), Canción para matar una culebra (1979), Imaginación (1984), and Arriesgaré la piel (1996). In addition to their musical achievements, Inti Illimani has been recognised for their activism and advocacy work, receiving numerous awards for their contributions to culture and social justice. In 2001 there was a controversial split of the group, which started when three key members left the group (José Seves, Horacio Durán and Horacio Salinas). They were replaced by Manuel Meriño (from Entrama), Cristián González and Juan Flores. Many called into question the ability of the group to carry on the Inti-Illimani name. Meanwhile, the three departed members started their own group they call Inti-Illimani Histórico.
