Kaija Saariaho was a Finnish composer born 1952 in Helsinki. Her innovative and boundary-pushing works established her as a prominent figure in modern classical music, with a distinctive musical language that combines elements of spectralism, electronic music, and traditional classical forms. Her compositions are characterised by their ethereal beauty, nuanced textures, and profound emotional depth, earning her numerous awards and accolades throughout her illustrious career. Saariaho began her education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied composition with Paavo Heininen and Einojuhani Rautavaara.
