A Beard of Bees is the Second studio album from NZ post-punk duo This Kind of Punishment, originally self-released by the band in 1984. Brothers Peter and Graeme Jeffries, hailing from the remote reaches of New Plymouth, released three extraordinary albums before taking seperate solo paths. The music on A Beard of Bees sounds as weird as its title may suggest but in spite of its weirdness the album is full of exquisite harmonies and gentle melodies over a backdrop of icy baritones, melancholic piano, alternating guitar chime and sparse violin drone. This iconic album has been resurrected by the San Francisco based Superior Viaduct label, who have given it a well deserved remastering to enliven the sound. It will appeal to fans of the Velvet Underground and Talk Talk, as well as those who appreciate the rich vein of New Zealand indie music of this period.
