Natural Snow Buildings | Artist
Natural Snow Buildings is a French avant-folk duo formed 1998 in Paris by Mehdi Ameziane (guitar, vocal) and Solange Gularte (guitar, cello, vocal). Both members release music also as solo artists: Mehdi Ameziane as TwinSisterMoon and Solange Gularte as Isengrind. This enigmatic musical duo has garnered a cult following for their unique blend of drone, folk, and experimental music. The band has remained relatively mysterious, often eschewing traditional promotional efforts in favor of letting their music speak for itself. With a discography spanning over two decades, Natural Snow Buildings has developed a reputation for crafting sprawling, otherworldly soundscapes that transport listeners to atmospheric and ethereal realms, with occasional lyrical references to horror films. The band's origins can be traced back to 1997 when Ameziane and Gularte began collaborating at University in Paris. The following year they self-released two cassettes: Witch-Season and Two Sides of a Horse, and in 2001 recorded Ghost Folks which was released in 2003. Then they self-released a double CD, The Winter Ray, in a limited edition, and, after moving from Paris to Vitré, Brittany in 2004, recorded The Dance of the Moon and the Sun. They then each issued solo material before producing more material as a duo. Their music draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, including psychedelic rock, drone, folk, and noise. Their albums, which frequently feature lengthy tracks that stretch well beyond the typical song length, invite listeners to immerse themselves in a hypnotic, trance-inducing sonic tapestry. Despite their relative obscurity within mainstream music circles, Natural Snow Buildings has amassed a dedicated following among fans of experimental and avant-garde music. Their discography, which includes a prolific output of albums, EPs, and limited-run releases, has garnered critical acclaim for its fearless creativity and boundary-pushing sonic explorations. Standout album releases include The Winter Ray (2004), The Dance of the Moon and the Sun (2006), The Snowbringer Cult (2008), Night Coercion Into the Company of Witches (2008), Daughter of Darkness (2009), Shadow Kingdom (2009), and Aldebaran (2016). Critics have likened the duo's music to ambient electronic groups such as Popol Vuh, The Dead C, Flying Saucer Attack, and The Tower Recordings.
