Socrates Drank the Conium, known also as Socrates, is a Greek progressive rock band formed 1969 in Athens by Antonis Tourkoyorgis (bass, vocals), Yannis Spathas (guitar) and Elias Boukouvalas (drums). Vangelis (keyboards) joined the re-formed band now simply named Socrates in 1976 after the demise of his former group Aphrodite's Child. The first incarnation of the band achieved success in the 1970s with a sound influenced by heavy blues and rock bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream. The band melded the unorthodox time signatures and orchestration of prog rock and the intensity of blues and hard rock, creating a unique sound that distinguished them from other Greek rock acts of that period. Outside Greece, Socrates is best known for Phos, their 1976 landmark collaboration album with Vangelis. Of their earlier three albums, the standouts are their self-titled debut from 1969 and the third album On The Wings from 1973. The band's original name refers to the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates who, when sentenced to death, chose as his method of execution to drink Conium (Hemlock) tea which induces a euphoric state before bringing about death.
