Osbourne Ruddock aka King Tubby was a Jamaican sound engineer and producer born 1941 in Kingston. Tubby, along with Lee Scratch Perry, was one of the greatest Jamaican music artists, who greatly influenced the development of dub in the 1960s and 1970s. Tubby played the mixing desk like an instrument, bringing instruments and vocals in and out of the mix to create an entirely new genre known as dub music. By the end of 1971 he was providing dub mixes for producers such as Glen Brown and Lee Scratch Perry. He worked closely with house band The Aggrovators, as well as artists such as Vivian Jackson (Yabby You), Augustus Pablo and George Boswell (Niney). King Tubby was shot and killed on 6 February 1989, outside his home in Duhaney Park, Kingston, upon returning from a session at his Waterhouse studio. He created literally hundreds dub versions of backing tracks and finished albums, which have been recycled countless times in re-releases and compilations. Outstanding albums include Dub From The Roots, King Tubby Meet Vivian Jackson, King at the Control, First Second and Third Generation of Dub, King Tubby's Controls, Freedom Sounds in Dub and Termination Dub (Comp.). Also highly recommended is the 2018 Jamaican Recordings label compilation Never Run Away: Dub Plate Specials.
