Clutch is an American stoner rock band formed 1991 in Germantown, Maryland by Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass), Jean-Paul Gaster (drums), and Neil Fallon (vocals). Pioneers of the genre of "Stoner Rock", the band released six consistently good albums before breaking through with critical and commercial success for their seventh album Blast Tyrant in 2004. They followed that the following year with the equally good Robot Hive/Exodus. Since then the band has continued to release consistently strong work, with 13 studio albums to-date. The band also works on side-projects like jam band The Bakerton Group. Outstanding albums include Clutch (1995), Blast Tyrant (2004), Robot Hive/Exodus (2005), From Beale Street to Oblivion (2007), Earth Rocker (2013), and Psychic Warfare (2015). Their eleventh studio album, Psychic Warfare, released October 2015, is conceptually influenced by science fiction author Philip K. Dick as explained by songwriter Neil Fallon. "His general philosophy and questions have always crept into my lyrics, because I share an interest in it", he added. "On Earth Rocker, 'Crucial Velocity' was definitely a Philip Dick song for me. On this record, 'X-Ray Visions' certainly is." The following following excerpt from a RYM review describes the band's sound succinctly: "this album has tons of fuzz/wah hooks. Blast Tyrant is a fantastic blend of hard blues rock and stoner rock. A must for any stoner rock or blues rock fan. The guitar tone on this album is great. Plus Neil’s lyrics are always so clever." With any Clutch album you get a load of hard riffs, epic imagery, heavy distortion, and muscular and emotive songwriting. It's the kind of music that appears like straightforward rock, but can knock you out with its badass style.
