Aimee Mann is an American singer-songwriter born 1960 in Richmond, Virginia. Mann began her career initially with Boston punk band Young Snakes, then in the 1980s as the bassist and a vocalist for 'Til Tuesday. That band released three albums and Mann wrote their top-ten single "Voices Carry". From 1990 Mann went solo and she released her debut solo album, Whatever, in 1993, which attracted critical praise but went largely unnoticed. In 1995, now with Geffen Records, Mann released her second album I'm With Stupid which, again, garnered positive reviews but modest commercial success. Her breakthrough came in 1999, when Mann recorded original material for the soundtrack to the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia, which earned Academy Award and Grammy Award nominations for the song "Save Me". She negotiated a contract release from David Geffen and co–founded her own label, SuperEgo Records, as a means of controlling her own artistic direction. The results were immediate, with the release of her two next excellent albums, Bachelor No. 2 (Or, the Last Remains of the Dodo) in 2000 and Lost in Space in 2002. Mann carried on to release albums infrequently, the most recent being 2017's Mental Illness. Mann is married to musician Michael Penn, who is the brother of actors Sean and Chris Penn.
