Akiko Yano is a Japanese pop and jazz musician and singer born 1955 in Tokyo. Yano was married to Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and she has recorded with Sakamoto's former band Yellow Magic Orchestra. Her early work tended towards synthpop and became progressively more artistic as she composed works for the screen, in particular for Studio Ghibli anime projects. Yano has collaborated with the artists Pat Metheny, Thomas Dolby, David Sylvian and Marc Ribot. Of her earlier albums, Japanese Girl, Tokimeki, Gohan ga dekitayo, and Tadaima are classics. Outstanding later works include the soundtrack My Neighbours The Yamadas, Welcome to Jupiter and Soft Landing.
