Celtic Frost was a Swiss extreme metal band formed 1981 in Zürich by Tom Gabriel Fischer (vocals, guitar), Martin Eric Ain (bass) and Stephen Priestly (drums). Formed in 1981 as Hellhammer, the band became Celtic Frost in 1984 and was active until 1993, but reformed over the period 2001-08. They are known for their strong influence on the development of extreme metal. The band has also been described as avant-garde metal due to their use of classical and electronica elements in some of their music. Their first two EPs Morbid Tales and Emperor's Return were highly regarded, but their debut album To Mega Therion ('85) polarised fans and critics alike, with many proclaiming it "the best Metal album ever" and others rubbishing it as "overblown and too pompous". Their following albums were less critically acclaimed, until their reunion album, 2006's Monotheist, which once again got the Metal fans and critics excited. Outstanding releases include the EPs Morbid Tales and Emperor's Return, and the albums To Mega Therion, Into the Pandemonium and Monotheist.
