Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed 1985 in Boston, Massachusetts, by John Petrucci (guitar, vocals), John Myung (bass) and Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals). The three members met while attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and formed a band originally called Majesty, to play Rush and Iron Maiden covers. Petrucci then added two more friends, Kevin Moore on keyboards and Chris Collins as lead vocalist. That lineup recorded The Majesty Demos which was released on cassette. In 1988 vocalist Chris Collins was replaced by Charlie Dominici and the band changed its name to Dream Theater. Dominici lasted only a short time and it wasn't until 1991 that the band finally found their permanent new vocalist in the shape of James LaBrie. The band has gone on to become one of the world's leading progressive metal bands, selling over 12 million records worldwide and receiving two Grammy Award nominations. To date, Dream Theater has released fourteen studio albums. The band's highest-selling release is their second album Images and Words (1992), which reached No. 61 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their sixth album Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From a Memory was ranked number 95 in Guitar World magazine's list of greatest 100 guitar albums of all time and ranked as the 15th Greatest Concept Album by Classic Rock Magazine. Standout albums include Images and Words, Awake, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory, Train of Thought and Live Scenes From New York.
