Foo Fighters is an American rock band, formed 1994 in Seattle, Washington, by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. Following the suicide of Kurt Cobain and the dissolution of Nirvana, Grohl created Foo Fighters as a one-man project to record his solo songs which he had been writing while working in Nirvana. Grohl entered the studio in October 1994 to record fifteen of the forty songs he had written. With the exception of a guitar part on "X-Static", played by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs, Grohl played every instrument and sang every vocal on the tracks. Grohl completed an album's worth of material in five days and handed out cassette copies of the sessions to his friends, and eventually released the recordings in a limited run under the title "Foo Fighters". Having heard about the disbanding of Seattle band Sunny Day Real Estate, Grohl drafted the group's bass player, Nate Mendel, and drummer, William Goldsmith into his new group. He then added Pat Smear, who had been a touring guitarist for Nirvana, to join as the group's second guitarist. Foo Fighters rolled on to become one of the US's most popular rock acts, taking the style of Nirvana and forging it into a mainstream melodic heavy rock sound. Foo Fighters have released nine studio albums to-date, standouts include Foo Fighters, The Colour and the Shape, There is Nothing Left top Lose and Wasting Light. The latest 2023 album But Here We Are, is also highly recommended.
