Gordon Giltrap MBE is an English guitarist and composer born 1948 in Brenchley, Kent. He has been described as "one of the most revered guitarists of his generation" who has be recognised by fellow musicians including Marillion's Steve Rothery and Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore. He started playing guitar at the age of 12 and received no formal tuition, choosing to develop his own style and technique. Giltrap's career took off in the 1960s while performing in the folk scene in London alongside contemporaries such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Mike Oldfield. At 18, Giltrap signed with Transatlantic Records and released his debut studio album, Gordon Giltrap (1968). Giltrap subsequently formed a band with Don Partridge called Accolade. Together they released one self-titled album, before Giltrap left to resume his solo career. His music crosses several genres, but generally falls into the baroque-folk style, with progressive rock influences, all highlighted by his virtuoso guitar playing. To-date Giltrap has released 38 studio albums, including collaborations with other artists such as Oliver Wakeman and his father Rick Wakeman. Standout albums include Visionary, Perilous Journey, Fear of the Dark and Under This Blue Sky. The 2017 collaboration with Paul Ward, The Last of England, is also recommended.
