Claire Elise Boucher aka Grimes is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and visual artist born 1988 in Vancouver. Boucher, who is self-taught in music and visual art, began writing music under the name Grimes in 2007. She chose the stage name Grimes based on her early identification with the grime music genre. Her sound incorporates elements of varied styles and genres including dream pop, R&B, electronic music, experimental, ethereal, and hip hop. The Guardian summarised her musical style: "By sounding a little like everything you've ever heard, the whole sounds like nothing you've ever heard." Her debut album Geidi Primes, a concept album inspired by the Dune series, was released by Arbutus Records in 2010 and later the same year she released her second album Halfaxa. Boucher signed with record label 4AD in 2012 and recorded the excellent Visions album which attracted critical acclaim. The album appeared on a number of publications' year-end lists and NME included it on their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2013. Visions won the Electronic Album of the Year Award and Grimes was nominated for the Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Junos. In 2015 Grimes followed up with the superb Art Angels album which also attracted ecstatic critical reviews. Her latest albums release Miss Anthropocene is scheduled for release in early 2020. Since 2018, Boucher calls herself "c" which is the scientific symbol for the speed of light.
