Guided by Voices is an American indie rock band formed 1983 in Dayton, Ohio by principal songwriter Robert Pollard (vocals, guitar), along with Mitch Mitchell (guitar), Tobin Sprout (guitar), Jim Pollard (guitar), and Kevin Fennell (drums). Their music was influenced by post–British invasion garage rock, psychedelic and progressive rock. After some initial lo-fi independent releases, their first album to gain attention was Propeller in 1992 which gained fans on the college rock circuit and was admired by fellow bands Sonic Youth, REM and The Breeders. The period 1994-96 was their creative high point, with the release of three classic albums: Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes and Under the Bushes Under the Stars. Other outstanding releases include Mag Earwhig!, Earthquake Glue and King Shit and the Golden Boys.
