Hoodoo Gurus | Artist
Hoodoo Gurus is an Australian rock band formed 1981 in Sydney by mainstay Dave Faulkner (vocals, guitar) together with James Baker (drums), Clyde Bramley (bass), and Brad Shepherd (guitar). Mark Kingsmill and Rick Grossman replaced Baker and Bramley as permanent drummer and bassist. The band quickly made a name for itself with a string of excellent singles including "Leilani", "Tojo", "My Girl", "I Want You Back", "Bittersweet", "Like Wow - Wipeout!" and "What's my Scene" released between 1982-84. After touring the United States the first time in '84 they gained popularity on the U.S. collage circuit with singles "Come Anytime" reaching No.1 and "Miss Freelove '69" reaching No.3 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The band's first two album releases Stoneage Romeos ('84) and Mars Needs Guitars! ('85) are superb examples of the Gurus' style of garage power pop, with a touch of psychedelia. Follow up albums Blow Your Cool! and Magnum Cum Louder are also excellent. Other standout albums include Bite the Bullet Live from '98 and their last album to-date, Purity of Essence from 2010. Also highly recommended are two double LP compilation albums, both released in 1992: Electric Soup containing their Singles, and Gorilla Biscuit containing B-sides and rarities. In 2003 Faulkner, Kingsmill and Shepherd released the excellent Turkish Delight album as a side project named Persian Rugs.
