Janine Elizabeth Cunningham aka Jah9 is a Jamaican roots reggae singer born 1983 in Montego Bay. One of the new breed of Jamaican roots reggae artists, Cunningham's music is often described as "jazz on dub", because her singing voice is influenced by Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, combined with the dancehall sound of Sizzla and the more potent dub rhythms similar to those of Augustus Pablo. In 2013 her superb debut album New Name appeared. The artist wrote, produced and arranged all her own material. Since then she has released two more solo albums on VP Records: 9 (2016) and Note to Self (2020), plus in 2017 she released a collaborative album with Mad Professor entitled Mad Professor Meets Jah9: In the Midst of the Storm. Outside of music, Jah9 is also a yoga teacher and is heavily involved in youth development work. She’s helped develop programs for at-risk youth in Kingston, with the creation of the non-profit youth and arts advocacy group known as Manifesto JA.
