James is an English rock band formed 1982 in Manchester by Tim Booth (vocals), Jim Glennie (bass), Paul Gilbertson (guitar) and Gavan Whelan (drums). Booth and Glennie are still with the band after numerous lineup changes over the years. They enjoyed popularity throughout the 1990s, with four top 10s on the UK Singles Chart and nine top 10s on the UK Albums Chart. Their best-known singles are "Come Home", "Sit Down", "She's a Star" and "Laid". The band's breakthrough came when a gig at the Haçienda caught the attention of Factory Records' Tony Wilson, who offered them a recording deal. The band cut the three-track Jimone EP, released on Factory, which led to them providing support for The Smiths between February and April 1985 on the Meat is Murder tour. having opted to move to Sire records, James released their debut album Stutter in July 1986, followed by Strip-Mine soon after. Gold Mother was released in June 1990 just as the "Madchester" movement peaked, with its wave of popular Manchester-based indie bands, bringing James to mainstream attention. In 1993 James were invited on an acoustic tour of the US supporting Neil Young at a series of outdoor venues. They returned to England ready to record with Brian Eno whom they had originally approached to produce Stutter but who had been unavailable. Eno brought out the ambience in James' music and resulted in two albums: Laid - which is arguably the band's finest work, and the more experimental Wah Wah. Following the departure of lead singer Tim Booth in 2001 after the release of their ninth album the excellent Pleased to Meet You, the band became inactive but reunited in January 2007 and has gone on to produce a further seven albums. Standout releases include Seven, Laid, Millionaires, Pleased to Meet You, and Getting Away With It...Live.
