Jan Garbarek is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist born 1947 in Mysen, Norway. Garbarek was born the only child of a former Polish prisoner of war, Czesław Garbarek, and a Norwegian farmer's daughter. Garbarek's sound is one of the hallmarks of the ECM Records label, which has released virtually all of his recordings. He began his recording career in the late 1960s and by 1973 he had turned his back on the harsh dissonances of avant-garde jazz, preferring the influences of Scandinavian folk melodies, and a more ambient textural approach to jazz. His style has been critically divisive and is sometimes labelled as "new-age" music. Garbarek gained wide recognition through his work with pianist Keith Jarrett, featuring prominently on albums such as Nude Ants, Luminessence and Arbour Zena. He has also undertaken collaboration projects with world music artists such as Fateh Ali Khan, as well as jazz-classical fusion projects with The Hilliard Ensemble. Garbarek has released 41 studio albums, among which standouts include Witchi-Tai-To, Belonging, I Took up the Runes, Twelve Moons, and the soundtrack the the Greek film "The Beekeeper", in collaboration with composer Eleni Karaindrou.
