Jimmy Campbell was an English musician and songwriter born 1944 in Liverpool, England. He was a member of Merseybeat groups The Kirkbys, The 23rd Turnoff, and Rockin' Horse, as well as releasing three solo albums. Campbell started in music at school, forming the band The Panthers. They supported The Beatles in January 1962 and performed at The Cavern on numerous occasions, with one show being broadcast on Radio Luxembourg. Campbell moved on from the Mersey sound to the newly evolving psychedelic scene but never settled into the London based movement. Described by Bob Stanley of The Times as "the era's lost songwriter", Campbell wrote a number of songs recorded by other artists including Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, The Swinging Blue Jeans and Rolf Harris. The Guardian included 23rd Turnoff's 2004 compilation album, The Dream of Michelangelo, in its list of 1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die. Standout Jimmy Campbell albums include Son of Anastasia (1969), Half Baked (1970), Jimmy Campbell's Album (1972) and the archival compilation Troubadour Lost Recordings 1965-1991 released in 2012. Rockin' Horse's 1972 album Yes It Is is also a superb release.
