Nicholas Drain Lowe aka "Basher" is an English singer-songwriter, musician, and producer born 1949 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Lowe started his career with Psych/Pop band Kippington Lodge, then joined pub rock favourites Brinsley Schwarz, singing and playing bass. He then formed Rockpile with ex Love Sculpture rocker Dave Edmunds in 1975, that band releasing one classic album Seconds of Pleasure. Lowe developed his songwriting skills and characteristic power-pop/new-wave sound which was popular with fellow artists on the Stiff Label, such as Elvis Costello. His first two solo albums, Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust, are both regarded as classics of the new-wave period, with their punchy song-orientated power-pop sound. Jesus of Cool was renamed Pure Pop For Now People, for US release. In 1979 Lowe married US Country singer and step-daughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene Carter, and worked on several albums with her before continuing his solo career. To-date Lowe has released 16 consistently excellent studio and live albums, plus a swag of Singles and EPs. Outstanding releases include Jesus of Cool (1978), Labour of Lust (1979), The Rose of England (1985), The Impossible Bird (1994), Dig My Mood (1998), The Convincer (2001), At My Age (2007) and the live album, Untouched Takeaway (2004). Lowe also collaborated in the early 90's, with John Hiatt, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner, on the short-lived supergroup Little Village, who released one self-titled album. Lowe is lately working with Yep Roc Records label-mates, the excellent Los Straitjackets, as his backing band for live performances.
