Novos Baianos | Artist
Os Novos Baianos was a Brazilian psych-rock and Tropicália group formed 1969 in Salvador, Bahia, by Paulinho Boca de Cantor (vocals), Pepeu Gomes (guitar), Moraes Moreira (vocals, guitar), Baby Consuelo (vocals) and Luiz Galvão (lyrics). Starting out as a fusion of psychedelic rock with traditional folk sounds, Novos Baianos is considered one of the most important and revolutionary groups in Brazilian music. After several superb rock-oriented albums in the early '70s, the band began to gravitate away from their earlier hippie image, towards more traditional Brazilian music styles under the influence of joão Gilberto. In '76 bass player Dadi left the band to form jazz-fusion group A Cor do Som. Novos Baianos continued for a few more years before the principal members pursued solo careers. Their finest albums are the superb Acabou chorare ('72) and Novos Baianos F.C. ('73). Other standouts include Novos Baianos and Vamos pro mundo from 1974.
