Paul Maurice Kelly AO is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist born 1955 in Adelaide, South Australia. Kelly is one of Australia's most revered musicians, David Fricke from Rolling Stone calls Kelly "one of the finest songwriters I have ever heard, Australian or otherwise". He wrote and published his first song at age 19 after being inspire by Van Morrison's album Astral Weeks. Soon after he joined Melbourne pub-rock band The High Rise Bombers in 1977. When that band folded, the guitarist Martin Armiger went on to form The Sports, and Kelly formed his own band The Dots. Paul Kelly & The Dots recorded two albums but never really took off. His third album Post was a solo work which showcased Kelly's songwiting ability and established his characteristic story-telling song style. The album is regarded by many as a masterpiece. With his next band The Coloured Girls aka The Messengers, Kelly recorded five brilliant albums back-to-back; Gossip, Under The Sun, So Much Water So Close To Home, Comedy, and Hidden Things. At the end of the '90s Kelly worked mainly solo or in collaboration, and continues to issue fine albums to the present day. Kelly has won a swag of Music Industry awards, the Australian of the Year Award, and awarded an Order of Australia. Outstanding albums include Post, Gossip, Under The Sun, So Much Water So Close To Home, Comedy, Hidden Things, Foggy Highway and Stolen Apples.
