Television is an American rock band formed 1973 in New York City by Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, Billy Ficca, and Richard Hell. An early fixture at CBGB and the 1970s New York rock scene, the band is considered influential in the development of punk and post-punk music. Hell, who's punk style was less disciplined than Verlaine and Co. left the band in 1975 to form The Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders, then went on to front Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Fred Smith replaced Hell, and Verlaine became Television's frontman, vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter. Television's debut Marquee Moon is a classic album and is often rated among the top 100 rock albums of all time. Their other two studio releases Adventure and Television are also outstanding, as is the live album The Blow Up. Verlaine and Lloyd both have had successful solo careers and the band still reforms from time to time for special gigs.
