Disintegration is the Eighth studio album by The Cure, originally released in 1989 on Fiction Records. This album, the crown jewel of their discography, sees the band return to darker sounds previously presented in albums such as Pornography, but fleshes them out to grandiose lengths of epic gothic proportions. The production gives life to the droning instrumentals that counter the standardised Cure formula that gave them hits previously. "Pictures of You" which stretches to 7 minutes gives the mood and feel of the record a breathing, tangible life. This seeps into every corner of the record, making more like a character study of Robert Smith and his depression, drug use and 30th Birthday, rather than a standard post punk record. The album elevates the Cure as an emotional entity greater than the sum of their hits. Essential listening for all music fans.
