The Dillinger Escape Plan was an American metalcore band formed 1997 in Morris Plains, New Jersey by bassist Adam Doll, lead singer Dimitri Minakakis, drummer Chris Pennie and guitarist Ben Weinman. The lineup shifted numerous times throughout its existence and by the time the group dissolved, Weinman was the only remaining founding member. The band emerged from the hardcore band Arcane, which was an aggressive, political-oriented act formed in 1996. TDEP's sound was rooted in extreme metal and post-hardcore, with influences from progressive rock, electronic music and jazz fusion. The band members had a mutual admiration for the music of earlier progressive bands such as King Crimson, Cynic, Meshuggah and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Their debut album Calculating Infinity, released in 1999, was regarded by many as a masterpiece, and by many others as random self-indulgent garbage. But it's generally accepted that there's a great deal of musical creativity under the music's abrasive surface. TDEP released six consistently great studio albums before deciding to disband in 2017. All their albums are recommended: Calculating Infinity, (1999), Miss Machine (2004), Ire Works (2007), Option Paralysis (2010), One of us is the Killer (2013) and Dissociation (2016). The archival release from 2019 Live Infinity is also recommended. In describing the group's sound, various reviewers have used terms such as "maniacally intense", "crushingly metallic", "displaying rigorous physical endurance", while at the same time noting their "precise musicianship" and "meticulously thought-out" compositions. Always wild on stage, the band outdid themselves at the 2002 Reading Festival, where their performance made national UK headlines after vocalist Greg Puciato defecated in full view onstage, put it into a bag, and threw it into the crowd before smearing the rest onto himself, proclaiming "This is a bag of shit, I just wanted to show you this so you'll recognize it later on throughout the day" referring to the quality of some bands he felt were appearing that day of the festival. The Dillinger Escape Plan is often considered one of the most influential bands in extreme music circles since the late 1990s.
