The Holy Modal Rounders was an American folk music group formed 1964 in The Lower East Side, New York City by Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber. The duo played a style of psychedelic folk music laced with politics and absurdist humour. They developed a cult following in the '60s and worked closely with fellow political satirists The Fugs. The 'Rounders had an ever changing roster of support players which included names such as Ed Sanders (The Fugs), Sam Shepard (author, playwrite, actor) and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan & Doobie Brothers). Their jokey single "Bird Song" was popular and featured in Dennis Hopper's film "Easy Rider". Of their recorded works, outstanding albums include The Holy Modal Rounders, The Holy Modal Rounders 2, The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders and Have Moicy! with Michael Hurley.
