The Sports | Artist

The Sports was an Australian rock group formed 1976 in Melbourne by core members Stephen Cummings (vocals), Robert Glover (bass), Paul Hitchins (drums), Andrew Pendlebury (guitar, vocals) and Martin Armiger (guitar). After splitting from rockabilly band The Pelaco Brothers, Cummings gathered several ex-Pelaco members to form new band The Sports, which eventually settled on the above lineup. The Sports were in tune with music trends dominating London rock, developing a style of fast and edgy song-based rock as an antidote to punk, which was dubbed new wave. The band's debut recording was the four-track EP Fair Game released early 1977 on the independent Zac Records label and influential UK music journal New Musical Express declared it 'Record of the Week'. Their excellent debut album Reckless was released the following year on Mushroom Records, produced by Cummings' Pelaco Bros. bandmate Joe Camilieri, who would soon form his own band Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons. Reckless was critically acclaimed and the band went on to record three more excellent studio albums: Don't Throw Stones, Suddenly! and Sondra, before calling it quits in 1981. Cummings has had a successful solo career since The Sports folded.
