The Stone Roses | Artist
The Stone Roses was an English rock band formed 1983 in Manchester, UK, by Ian Brown (vocals), John Squire (guitar), Andy Couzens (guitar), Pete Garner (bass) and Simon Wolstoncroft (drums). Reni became drummer in 1984 and Mani bassist in 1987. The Stone Roses were one of the pioneering groups of the Madchester movement in the late 1980s and early 1990s and many critics view their 1989 self-titled debut album as one of the finest British albums ever recorded. Their sound was a mixture of alternative rock, psychedelic rock and electronic dance music which influenced the next wave of bands such as Oasis. The band was notable for not giving press interviews and generally ignoring media publicity where possible. They released their second studio album Second Coming in 1994 and split up two years later as a result of protrated legal battles with their record company Silvertone. In 2011 they reformed and lasted until 2017, during which time they released several singles and archival albums. Standout albums include the two studio albums plus Turns Into Stone, which is a compilation of unreleased material. The 7" Singles Collection from 2009 is also highly recommended. Singer Ian Brown has carried on with a successful solo career.
