Ulcerate is a New Zealand progressive death metal band formed 2000 in Auckland by guitarist Michael Hoggard and drummer Jamie Saint Merat. The current day lineup also includes Paul Kelland on bass and vocals. Ulcerate emerged from the relative isolation of New Zealand's extreme metal scene with a sound influenced by dissonant extreme metal groups like Gorguts, Immolation, and Cryptopsy. They deliver a maelstrom of abrasive, dissonant art-metal guitars, thunderous blastbeats, and vocal roars, evoking an all-encompassing sense of crushing dread. They initially recorded two demos, which were compiled and released in 2006 under the title The Coming of Genocide. Their debut studio album proper 2007's Of Fracture and Failure was released by the Dutch label Neurotic Records, and featured the high-pitched, shrieking style vocals of Ben Read, who was with the group for one album before they recruited Kelland, who took them back to a deeper, more typically "death metal" sound. They went on to roll out six excellent albums back-to-back with, Everything Is Fire (2009), The Destroyers of All (2011), Vermis (2013), Shrines of Paralysis (2016), Stare into Death and Be Still (2020), and Cutting the Throat of God (2024). Every album has been self-produced by drummer Jamie Saint Merat at Auckland's MCA studios, the music benefiting greatly from his deliberately raw production. Their most recent album Cutting the Throat of God is scheduled for June 2024. The band's drummer Jamie Saint Merat is considered an extremely important aspect of Ulcerate's sound due his technical skill and role in composing, recording, producing, and mixing their music, as well as creating the artwork. Guitarist Michael Hoggard is notable for his extensive use of dissonance and guitar effects, and what has been described as "a frenetic mix of exotic chords and unorthodox progressions". Ulcerate are refarded as one of New Zealand's most prominent extreme metal acts and have toured widely across North America and Europe.
