Wo Fat is an American heavy stoner-rock band founded 2003 in Dallas, Texas, by Kent Stump (guitar, vocals), Matt Watkins (guitar, vocals), Tim Wilson (bass), and Michael Walter (drums). Originally formed with a mission to make music that is crushingly heavy which "allows them to crank out monolithic, fuzzed out, downtuned riffs, all the while staying true to the haunting blues that wail and moan deep within their souls." they take elements of southern blues, stoner rock and doom metal, drawing from the likes of Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top and other 1970s acts. On their website the band describe their music as a "swampadelic visionquest of overdriven, fuzz-laden riffage and jazz-minded jam explorations". Their debut album The Gathering Dark was released on 15 October 2006, and the follow-up Psychedelonaut would see release on 3 March 2009, gaining further buzz from fans and critics alike. Their third album Noche del Chupacabra was released two years later via Nasoni Records in 2011. The band continued playing numerous shows in the Texas area including marquee events such as Doom in June and SXSW. Following an appearance at a Small Stone Records showcase, they signed with that label and released The Black Code in November 2012. That album was a breakthrough, getting positive reception from the likes of The Obelisk, Louder Sound, Metal Temple, and Metal Observer to name a few. Wo Fat would tour Europe alongside Abrahma to support the album, including both bands releasing a Split 7" and making appearances at Roadburn Festival and Desertfest London. The Conjuring followed in June 2014, prompting a tour of Europe with Mothership, including an appearance at Freak Valley Festival which was later released as a live album. To date the group has released six studio albums among three split releases and a live album. Standouts include Psychedelonaut (2009), The Black Code (2012), The Conjuring (2014), The Singularity (2022), and Live Ju Ju: Wo Fat at Freak Valley (2015). The band's name is derived from a villainous character from the CBS series Hawaii Five-O, portrayed by Khigh Dhiegh in the original series spanning from 1968-1980.
